(Kauai)– In an effort to raise awareness about Earth Day, which falls on April 22, the county’s Staff Level Green Team is sponsoring a photo contest.
Digital photos depicting memorable Earth Day activities are eligible.
Entries should include a brief description of how the photo relates to Earth Day, along with contact information, i.e. name and phone number.
Photos must be emailed tosblane@kauai.gov by Friday, April 27.
The top three photos will be featured on the county’s Facebook page, and also entered in a drawing for bus passes including: 12-month; 6-month; and 1-month bus passes, valued at $240, $120 and $25 respectively.
The primary mission of the Staff Level Green Team is to improve the county’s resource management that will result in cost-savings and reduce the county’s carbon footprint.
The team’s goals include:
*Lead by example and take kuleana(responsibility) for caring for the aina(land).
*Manage all resources properly including: waste; water; and energy.
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA. Soon afterward, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created.
This year’s theme is “One Billion Acts of Green.” As of this writing, nearly 969 million acts have been pledged on the Earth Day Network website,http://www.earthday.org/2012.
Other Earth Day activities scheduled on Kaua’i include:
*Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park Earth Day work day – Saturday, April 21
*Kaua’i Community College 4th annual Earth Day Celebration – Thursday, April 26, 12 to 6 p.m. Other “green” activities are also planned for that week.
