(KOLOA) – The County of Kaua‘i invites the public to a workshop to discuss Safe Routes to School options for Kôloa School, including the potential to convert a portion of Waikomo Road to one-way traffic. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kôloa Elementary School cafeteria.
The Safe Routes to School initiative is part of a national program which aims to make the areas around schools safe for pedestrians and bicyclists. The county has been working with Kôloa Elementary School and the Kôloa-Po‘ipû Neighborhood Association to improve safety for children walking and biking to Kôloa School on Waikomo Road. This public meeting will allow the community an opportunity to provide input on the proposed options.
The Safe Routes to School program is one of the projects listed in Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr’s Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kaua‘i. The vision calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua‘i to be part of creating an island that is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all – keiki to kupuna – and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
