(Hawaii)– From televised runway shows to the creation of trend-setting aloha wear, Honolulu Community College’s Fashion Technology program is known for cultivating top island designers such as Danene Lunn of Manuheali‘i, Kini Zamora, Ari South and Jay Nicolas Sario.
The next generation of budding talents will showcase their work at the annual student fashion show. Called The Collective, this masterfully produced show will reveal a collection of inspirations and designs by first-year and graduating students. Each graduating student will feature multiple looks that will produce 16 distinct collections ranging from rave wear, business, children, Lolita fashion, Hawaiian and, of course, show stoppers.
“The Fashion Technology program started in 1929 when commercial sewing was introduced at Territorial Trade School, which eventually became Honolulu Community College,” said Keala Chock, dean of communication and services. “The Fashion Technology program has evolved over the years to incorporate the latest equipment and culminates with the highly anticipated fashion show each spring. In previous years, students have created everything from swimwear to bridal lines, as well as featured hand-dyed textiles and specialty fabrics. It’s a show you don’t want to miss!”
Honolulu CC’s Fashion Technology program is the only community college program of its kind on O‘ahu. Students learn theoretical knowledge and practical skills for clothing construction, industrial sewing, flat pattern making, designing, textiles, fashion sketching, grading, marking and cutting, computerized grading and marker marking. Once students have mastered the fashion design and production techniques, they will advance to the high-tech equipment and software used in developing patterns. Students can earn a certificate or a two-year associate degree.
