(Hawaii)– On Monday, December 2 from 5:00–6:00 p.m., Colette Higgins, Hawaiian historian and dean of academic affairs at Windward CC, will deliver a public presentation titled Three Queens & the People of Kalaupapa on the third floor of Hale La‘akea library.
The presentation is part of a series of events through February in conjunction with A Source of Light, Constant and Never Fading exhibit in the library. Events and the exhibit are free and open to the public. Access to the third floor is available by elevator.
Higgins’ presentation describes how three queens of Hawai’i helped those who were sent to Kalaupapa: Queen Emma corresponded with her cousin Peter Kaeo (1873-1876). Queen Kapi’olani visited Kalaupapa in 1884, listened to the patients, and responded to their needs, and Queen Lili’uokalani visited Kalaupapa four times.
Colette Higgins holds an MA in history (Pacific Islands) and a BA in history and anthropology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She has taught Hawaiian history for nearly 20 years and currently is dean of academic affairs at Windward Community College where she oversees language arts, humanities and academic support.
