(Hawaii)– Be a part of history by documenting your COVID-19 experience with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Center for Oral History (COH) in the College of Social Sciences.
“Hawaiʻi Life in the Time of COVID-19” is designed for the community to reflect on their experiences, acknowledge major events, honor courageous acts and help to understand social and economic trends.
Anyone going through the COVID-19 experience in Hawaiʻi is invited to participate in one of two ways:
- Request to be interviewed.
- Document your own oral history by self-recording an audio or video, sharing photos from a journal/diary entries or daily life, or submitting poetry, mele (song/chant) or other art.
“We are providing an opportunity for our community members to pause and reflect upon their experience and envision a better future for our islands,” said Davianna Pōmaikaʻi McGregor, COH director and ethnic studies professor in the College of Social Sciences.
The center will compile the responses into an archive for researchers and policymakers to reference. Key themes from the submissions will also be identified.
This research approach is based on the rapid response oral history method used after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the 2017 and 2018 women’s marches.
