(NĀWILIWILI) – Three fishermen were rescued Sunday morning after their boat sunk in waters off Nāwiliwili.
No injuries were reported.
Shortly before 9:30 a.m., Līhu‘e firefighters were called to assist the U.S. Coast Guard at Nāwiliwili Harbor after receiving a report of three fisherman who were near Kawai Point when they ran into problems with their boat, a rigid hulled inflatable.
According to a preliminary report, the boat the men were aboard sunk, and they proceeded to swim to a remote shoreline nearby. Two of the fishermen were able to walk along the shoreline to the Nāwiliwili break wall, where personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard brought them back to the harbor.
The remaining fisherman was located on the northern coastline of Kawai Point and needed further assistance. Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 short hauled the man to a landing zone at Nāwiliwili boat ramp.
The three fishermen did not report any injuries and were released at the scene.
Responding personnel cleared the scene at approximately 11 a.m.
According to officials, the distressed vessel was later towed back to the Nāwiliwili boat ramp by the U.S. Coast Guard.
