(HONOLULU) – The following statement is attributable to Mayor Rick Blangiardi on the death of waterman Clyde Aikau:
“I was saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Clyde Aikau — a legendary surfer, lifeguard, all-around waterman, and the younger brother of the iconic Eddie Aikau. Clyde lived a remarkable life, defined by courage, commitment, and aloha.
He was a fierce competitor who always carried himself with humility. Clyde made history by winning the first “Eddie” held at Waimea Bay in 1986 — a powerful tribute to his beloved brother. He carried Eddie’s legacy with pride, helping to preserve and share Hawaiʻi’s deep connection to the ocean, to each other, and to the culture that unites us.
As a lifeguard on the North Shore, a crewmember of the Hōkūleʻa, and a lifelong advocate for Hawaiian values, Clyde lived with great purpose. He touched countless lives with his quiet strength, selflessness, and love for these islands.
On behalf of the City and County of Honolulu, we extend our deepest condolences to the Aikau ʻohana. Clyde’s legacy as a guardian of our shores will live on for generations. He will be deeply missed.”
