(Honolulu)– A lifetime of community support, dedicated volunteer work, and passion for America’s pastime were just a few of the hallmark gifts Peter Wokoun Jr. graciously gave to his beloved ‘Ewa Beach community. Now Peter is forever recognized for his many civic contributions, at the park where he spent countless hours creating a safe and clean space for keiki to play ball!
A ceremony today at Pu‘uloa Neighborhood Park marked the renaming of the park’s baseball field in honor of Peter, with the unveiling and blessing of the new park signage. Family, friends, and community leaders joined to recognize the late Leeward resident, who passed away this past February at the young age of 56.
Peter is well known for his dedication to baseball and tenacious maintenance of the field which now bears his name; keeping the park’s grounds in excellent condition by watering the surrounding grass, lining the baseball diamonds, and officiating little league games as an umpire. He also supported the free exercise of our democracy by volunteering at voting booths during local elections.
“Peter didn’t just contribute to the physical improvement of Pu‘uloa and ‘Ewa Beach, he also created a warm sense of community and a safe, welcoming space through his selfless acts,” said City Councilmember Augie Tulba. “He was a do-gooder through and through, helping out his neighbors with home and property cleanups if they needed assistance. The renaming of the park leaves an indelible mark on this community, as his legacy continues to inspire future generations to serve their communities with the same enthusiasm and dedication that Peter demonstrated throughout his life.”
This recognition of Peter culminates recognition efforts from the ‘Ewa Neighborhood Board, State Senator Kurt Fevella, and Councilmember Tulba. The field was officially renamed through City Council Resolution 25-132, after Peter was posthumously honored by Councilmember Tulba and the Honolulu City Council with an Honorary Certificate. From all of us in the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation, and the ‘Ewa Beach Community, mahalo for your service, Peter!
