(WAIMĀNALO) – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction will begin the reconstruction of the beloved Waimānalo Beach Park Pavilion, a vital community gathering space, with work scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
The pavilion will be rebuilt to match the size and architectural character of the original structure, which was built in 1960 and demolished in 2019 due to structural concerns. The new pavilion will consist of precast concrete structural supports, concrete block walls, and an asphalt shingle roof with stainless steel gutters and downspouts. Built-in concrete benches will provide seating within the pavilion.
The new pavilion will offer a partially enclosed space that provides shelter from rain, wind, and sun, making it suitable for everyday use as well as special community events, including the annual Gabby Pahinui Festival. Aligned with the Department of Parks and Recreation’s mission to “add quality to life,” the restored pavilion will serve as a long-term recreational facility, enhancing residents’ park experiences and fostering family gatherings for years to come.
The design contract, valued at $330,137, was awarded to Jeffrey Nishi Architects, and the construction contract, totaling $1,485,000, was awarded to T. Iida Contracting, Ltd. During construction, residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution around the project area due to construction vehicles and heavy equipment. The parking lot will remain open but the construction zone will be fenced off, and park users should anticipate some noise and dust while work is underway. Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays. Completion is expected at the beginning of summer 2026.
