(HONOLULU) – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Customer Services is reminding residents to pay close attention to the fuel gauge of the vehicle they want to use for their driving test.
Examiners are checking for at least a quarter tank of gas or 25% charge for electric vehicles used for the behind-the-wheel test to obtain a Hawaiʻi driver’s license. These are two of the often overlooked pre-test requirements of the more than 37,000 behind-the-wheel exams conducted annually on Oʻahu, where insufficient fuel for the test duration is grounds for an automatic failure and raises concerns about the vehicle running out of gas mid-test and creating a potential hazard.
“While the test is about driving skills, ensuring your vehicle is properly fueled is part of demonstrating responsible, safe driving habits, making it a definite failure risk if neglected,” said Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro, who oversees driver licensing centers and satellite city halls across Oʻahu.
Other key pre-drive requirements of the road test include vehicle instrument panel gauges that are working properly, warning indicator lights that are not on, and a vehicle that is free of any obnoxious odors, insects, or animal fur. Additionally, the windshield cannot have a crack or chip larger than a dime (0.7 inches).
