(LĪHU‘E) – The County Recycling Office recently partnered with a local educator and writer, Dr. Liela Nitta, to distribute her illustrated children’s book to Kaua‘i students.
The book, “Triangles of Continuity,” is a story about the life cycle of endemic ‘O‘opu Nākea, or Awaous stamineus, and the importance of keeping waterways free of pollution.
“This local story is part of a larger global reminder to recycle and reduce waste in order to preserve our resources for the future,” stated Dr. Nitta.
After reaching out to all public and private elementary schools on Kaua‘i, the County Recycling Office received requests for 500 copies of the illustrated book.
Dr. Nitta will be presenting and distributing her book to Kawaikini Public Charter School’s fifth and sixth grade students on Wednesday, and to Kilauea Elementary School’s second through fifth grade students on Friday. Other book distributions are being scheduled.
“It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Nitta on this educational initiative to help our keiki understand the importance of caring for our natural resources,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., who congratulated Dr. Nitta in person on Tuesday. “Mahalo to our County Recycling Office for their outreach efforts and continuing to build partnerships with our local community.”
