(HONOLULU) – Residents in Ewa Beach are now the latest with the option to turn renewing a vehicle registration into a convenient part of a visit to the supermarket.
A self-service DMV kiosk has been installed inside the Safeway supermarket at 91-1119 Keaunui Drive in Ewa Beach.
This new location brings to 10 the total number of these bright yellow touch-screen terminals that are located at select Safeway and Foodland supermarkets across Oʻahu, where the unattended technology enables residents to quickly renew their vehicle registrations on their own time during store hours and weekends, without needing to visit a satellite city hall.
These kiosks operate much like an ATM, and processed a record 165,656 registrations in 2024, representing a 9 % increase from the previous year.
“Our DMV self-service kiosks are no longer just a nice-to-have service, but rather a must-have service as we adapt to a need to develop smarter delivery of a basic government function like renewing a motor vehicle registration,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the city’s Department of Customer Services, which administers DMV services across Oʻahu.
Key advantages of the self-service kiosks include being accessible at supermarkets that are open late, if not 24/7, and accepting renewals up to 10 months past the expiration date with a $16 late fee. A $4 remote transaction fee is charged in addition the 2.5 % fee assessed on credit card and debit cards transactions.
Aside from the new Ewa Beach location, self-service kiosks are deployed inside the Foodland on the North Shore in Lāʻie as well as the Waipiʻo Shopping Center, and Safeway stores at seven locations: Hawai‘i Kai Shopping Center; Kāne‘ohe Bay Shopping Center; Kapolei Shopping Center; Salt Lake Shopping Center; Waimalu Shopping Plaza; Kapahulu Shopping Center; and South Beretania Street.
