(Kauai)– In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Committee on the Status of Women will host a special program spotlighting Frances Frazier’s memoir, “Hali‘a of Hawai’i: A Legacy of Language.”
In her story, Frazier takes readers adventuring around the world and shares life events that led to her rediscovery of the Hawaiian language and passion for translating Hawaiian documents, especially those relating to land deeds and rights to the ‘aina for people of Hawaiian heritage.
Frazier, who turns 98 in July, is a designated living treasure of Kaua’i and recipient of numerous awards for her translations and views on land and environmental issues. She will be represented at the event by her daughter Stephanie Frazier, Dawn Kawahara, co-editor and publisher of Frazier’s book, and others who carry on the author’s legacy.
The event will be held on Thursday, March 29, 4:30 p.m., at the Līhu’e Civic Center, Mo’ikeha Building, rm. 2A and B.
An opening chant in honor of Frazier and one of her award-winning songs will be presented by members of the Ka ‘Imi Institute, a Hawaiian cultural school.
Kawahara’s slide presentation titled “The Story Behind the Stories of Hali‘a” will center on Frazier’s life, her work, and highlights of the book, as well as touch upon portions of the archived journals of Frazier’s mariner father.
A writer-poet and promoter of the arts and Hawaiian culture, Kawahara has called Kaua’i her “heart home” for almost 30 years. She is the owner of Kaua’i’s TropicBird Press, a book publishing and distribution company. Light refreshments will be served at the event.
Anyone requiring an alternate format or auxiliary aid for the event should contact the Office of Boards and Commissions at 241-4920 at least five days prior to the event.
