(Honolulu) –Hawai‘i Pacific Health has been named the winner of the 2012 Enterprise HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence. Since 1994, the Nicholas E. Davies Award recognizes excellence in health information technology, specifically excellence in use of the EHR to successfully improve quality of care and patient safety.
Winning enterprise organizations, including academic medical centers, community hospitals, rural health hospitals and critical-access hospitals, must demonstrate the value of the EHR in informing patient care and improving outcomes, including challenges faced and solutions created that can be replicated by other organizations. In addition, the winners of the HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award must have achieved Stage 6 or Stage 7 on the HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model and key meaningful use milestones.
This 2012 Enterprise HIMSS Davies Award winner, a Stage 6 hospital, as measured by http://www.himssanalytics.org/emram/stage7Hospitals.aspx the EMRAM evaluation tool, is a nonprofit healthcare system and Hawaii’s largest healthcare provider. Committed to providing the highest quality medical care and service to the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Region, Hawai’i Pacific Health operates four hospitals, 49 outpatient clinics and service sites, with more than 1,300 affiliated physicians. In addition, the health system has leading strategic initiatives in women’s health, pediatric care, cardiovascular services, cancer care and bone and joint services.
“Hawai‘i Pacific Health ranks among the top five percent of hospitals nationwide in the adoption of electronic health records, with system-wide implementation that allows its hospitals and physicians to offer integrated, coordinated care throughout the state,” says C. Eric Hartz, MD, chair, HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Committee and VP and Chief Medical Information Officer, Trinity Health, citing this statistic on the health system’s website. “All of us on the Davies Enterprise Committee congratulate Hawai’i Pacific Health for their focus on improving the quality of healthcare delivery with the best use of health IT.”
As noted in its Davies Award case studies,
- The health system has demonstrated an annual return on investment from an integrated electronic health record of nine percent over 10 years.
Success was achieved through the integration of all revenue cycle functions and by driving financial and clinical performance through transparency, collaboration and accountability.
- Health IT was not limited to inpatient and outpatient settings.
Patients were empowered through a web portal to enable viewing of laboratory results, educational materials, appointment scheduling, and health maintenance reminders. More than 29,000 patients now regularly communicate through this portal, averaging 650 logons per day.
Hawai‘i Pacific Health will be recognized at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans, La. on March 3-7, 2013. For more information on applying for the HIMSS Davies Awards of Excellence, visit the HIMSS website. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
