(HONOLULU) – Under the direction of Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will be illuminated in turquoise from sundown on Monday, May 5, 2025, to sunrise on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in support of the American Lung Association’s “Turquoise Takeover” campaign. This nationwide initiative raises lung cancer awareness and highlights the importance of early detection and research advancements to save lives.
Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will join other iconic landmarks across the country, in glowing turquoise—the signature color of LUNG FORCE, the American Lung Association’s movement to end lung cancer. Since its inception in 2014, LUNG FORCE has raised more than $30 million for critical lung cancer research, education, and advocacy.
“Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and far too many families in Hawaiʻi have been impacted by this disease,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “By lighting Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in turquoise, we stand in solidarity with those affected and reaffirm our commitment to raising awareness, supporting early detection efforts, and funding research that will save lives.”
Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in the United States and disproportionately affects Native Hawaiians, who have among the highest rates of lung cancer in the nation. It is also the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Hawaiʻi, many of whom are diagnosed at a late stage. Increasing awareness and access to early screening can significantly improve survival rates.
