(Kaua’i)– In honor of National Police Week, Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. held a proclamation ceremony at the Lîhu’e Civic Center. The week-long celebration continued with a Council recognition ceremony held at the Historic County Building.
“It is important that our community understands the duties, responsibilities and sacrifices that our officers make every day,” said Mayor Carvalho. “It’s also an opportunity for us to offer our support and gratitude for all that they do.”
This year’s theme is “Honoring our heroes who serve and protect.”
“Police Week is the time that we honor law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in their duty to serve others, and pay our respects to the families and loved ones they left behind,” said Kaua’i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “We also invite people to participate in Police Week activities to get a better understanding of the role of our officers and our department.”
Police Week activities include a display at Kukui Grove Shopping Center on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public will have an opportunity to tour KPD’s Incident Command Vehicle, meet police officers and learn about the various units within the department. Officers will also be offering free Keiki ID’s and child seat inspections.
National Police Week was created in 1962 by a Congressional Joint Resolution that was signed by President John F. Kennedy proclaiming May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in remembrance of police officers killed in the line of duty.
