(Kailua) – Mike Kaawa, one of Hawaii’s finest 12-string guitar players, will take the stage on February 23 to continue the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation’s popular free monthly “Kanikapila In Kailua” Hawaiian music series. Kaawa was on last year’s “Kanikapila in Kailua” lineup as well, playing for the crowd in October.
“‘Kanikapila in Kailua’ is all about bringing the best musicians in Hawaii to perform on the Windward side, and Mike Kaawa is truly one of the most respected Hawaiian musicians in the business,” said Terry George, executive vice president and COO of the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. “He is a master of the 12-string guitar, and his Hawaiian songs come straight from the heart.
Along with his guitar prowess, Kaawa, who began his musical journey at age 10, captivates audiences with his stage presence and strong vocal abilities. He honed his talent by playing with the likes of Gabby Pahinui, Atta Isaacs and Sonny Chillingworth. He’s toured with Milton Lau’s Native Hawaiian Band at the Hawaiian Slack Key Festivals, joining talents like Dennis Kamakahi and Cyril Pahinui.
His latest album, “Kuapaka‘a,” was recorded in 2012 by Hwn Boy Records and features songs that remind listeners of the simple lives Hawaiians once lived and of the rich traditions carried on from father to son. Kaawa has described his music as “Hawaiian With attitude.”
“Kanikapila in Kailua” is a monthly program, created in partnership with noted Windward Oahu musician Kawika Kahiapo, that celebrates Hawaiian music and culture. It is held one Saturday each month from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on the first floor of the parking garage near Whole Foods Market in Kailua Town. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own beach chairs, pick up food from their favorite Kailua eatery and sit back, relax and enjoy amazing local music.
Musicians and musical groups to appear in upcoming “Kanikapila in Kailua” concerts include: Natalie Ai Kamau‘u and Io (March 23), Na Leo’s Lehua Kalima (April 20), Jon Yamasato and Herb Ohta Jr. (May 25) and Holunape (June 22).
