(Honolulu)– Repaving of the public parking lots within the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve will require closure of the popular natural destination for the duration of the two-week project.
The repaving work is scheduled from Monday, September 8 through Tuesday, September 23, 2025, weather permitting.
This will allow a City contractor to conduct the repaving and restriping of the two main public parking lots, which offer approximately 280 parking stalls.
The nearly $840,000 repaving contract for this work will be conducted by Seal Pros LLC.
The main roadway into Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was last repaved in October 2019, with the commercial vehicle parking lot repaved in September 2017.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of regular nature preserve visitors and first-time guests while the bay is closed for this necessary work.
A historically significant location for Native Hawaiians paddlers, and a favorite fishing location for some Hawaiian Royalty, Hanauma Bay was designated the state’s first Marine Life Conservation District in 1967. Its popularity grew in the 1970’s and 1980’s when visitor attendance peaked at an estimated 10,000 people a day. A management plan implemented in 1990 helped to mitigate this human impact by: reducing visitation, improving facilities, banning the feeding of fish, and educating bay visitors. In 2019, average daily attendance was almost 3,000 people, with nearly 845,000 tourists and residents visiting the nature preserve that year. In 2024, Hanauma Bay saw 400,776 visitors, with daily attendance around 1,400.
The City continues to work towards balancing the recreational and cultural needs of the community with the education and preservation mandates of this natural treasure.
