If you’ve lived on Oahu long enough, you know that “winter” usually just means shorter days and slightly more rain. But stepping into the Hawaii Convention Center this week felt like walking through a portal into a totally different latitude.
We were invited to cover the opening of “‘Twas the Light Before Christmas on Ice,” and if you are looking for that elusive holiday spirit in Honolulu, this is exactly where you’ll find it. It is massive, it is immersive, and yes, it is genuinely cold enough to wear that heavy coat you’ve been hiding in the back of your closet.
The Vibe: A Digital Winter Wonderland
The first thing that hits you is the scale. The event covers over 50,000 square feet of the exhibit hall. Unlike traditional Christmas displays that just rely on static trees, this event leans heavily into modern tech.
The centerpiece is a visual experience unlike any in the island. It’s a 10,000-square-foot room wrapped in projections that make you feel like you’re inside a holiday multiverse. The lights, the music, and the moving visuals are mesmerizing, kids were running around chasing projections on the floor, while parents were just standing back, soaking it in.
The Main Attraction: Ice Skating in the Aloha State:
New this year, and easily the highlight for many, is the 8,000-square-foot indoor ice skating rink.
Skating in Hawaii is a rare treat, and they’ve done it right. The rink is spacious, and the atmosphere is fun rather than intimidating.
Whether you’re a pro or gripping the wall for dear life (no judgment here!), it’s a blast. The best part? Skate rentals are included in the ticket price, so you don’t get hit with hidden fees at the counter.

For the Keiki (and the Sweet Tooth)
If you have little ones who aren’t ready for skates, the Keiki Wonderland is a lifesaver. It features bounce houses, a soft play area, and a holiday movie theater zone where families can take a breather.
My personal favorite detail was the Honolulu Cookie Company “Letters to Santa” station. It’s a smart local touch that grounds this high-tech event in our island community. Speaking of local, the American Savings Bank Holiday Marketplace pops up on select weekends, featuring local vendors. It’s a great way to grab gifts without facing the mall crowds.
For food, don’t expect just standard concession stand fare. We spotted specialty cocktails for the adults (try the “Snowfall Mojito”) and dedicated hot cocoa and eggnog stations to keep the winter theme going.
What to Expect When Buying a Ticket ($26.50-$42)
If you’re planning to go, here is the logistical scoop to ensure a smooth visit:
* Timed Entry: Tickets are sold in timed slots (every 30 minutes) to control crowds. I highly recommend booking online in advance, as weekends will likely sell out.
* Ticket Options: You can buy a “Skate” or “No-Skate” ticket. If you think there’s even a 1% chance you’ll want to get on the ice, just grab the skate ticket upfront.
* Dress Code: It is air-conditioned and cool inside to maintain the ice and the vibe. Wear closed-toe shoes (mandatory for skating) and bring a jacket.
* Pricing: Tickets start around $26.50-$42 with discounts available for children, seniors, and military.

The Verdict
“‘Twas the Light Before Christmas on Ice” successfully bridges the gap between a high-tech art installation and a classic family holiday fair. It’s one of the few places in Honolulu right now where you can genuinely feel like you’ve escaped to a winter climate, without the TSA line.
The event runs through January 4, 2026, at the Hawaii Convention Center.
