(Honolulu)– The Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Coalition (HCCC) announces United States Senator Mazie Hirono as the recipient of the 2018 Courage Award for her bravery and continued fight on behalf of Hawaii’s families in Congress while battling stage IV cancer.
Senator Hirono will be publicly honored at the annual HCCC Summit on Wednesday, February 21st at the Hilton Hawaiian Village from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will be moderated by journalist Yunji de Nies. Sponsored by the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH), the HCCC is comprised of health care providers, community partners and government personnel dedicated to making a difference in cancer for Hawaii.
“Although cancer is not always detected early, treatment can still be effective. Over the past several years, there has been a renaissance in cancer care, as evidenced by many breakthroughs, including the immunotherapy that Senator Hirono has received,” said Shane Morita, MD, Medical Director of Surgical Oncology at The Queen’s Medical Center and Chair of the Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Coalition.
The event will include a presentation of the proclamation signed by Governor David Ige declaring February 21, 2018 as “Cancer Awareness Day.” Other distinguished speakers will include Lieutenant Governor Douglas Chin, United States Senator Brian Schatz, Senator Roz Baker and Senator Josh Green.
