A study indicates that being physically active can help people with insomnia get better sleep – but they have to stick with the exercise program to get the result.
At Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, researcher Kelly Glazer Baron saw this in 16 weeks of data on 11 women ages 57 to 70 who had insomnia. She says the women didn’t sleep better on nights following exercise – it took about four months. But she says:
“Women had an increase on average of 45 minutes of their sleep duration. That’s as large or larger than most of the behavioral and medication studies.”
She says the findings likely apply to men, also.
The study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
