(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
The stress of work can take a toll on the body. Researcher Sara Luckhaupt of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at cardiovascular disease – mostly, heart attacks and strokes – from 2008 to 2012 among workers younger than 55. Luckhaupt says some occupations are at higher risk of heart attack and stroke, and stress can contribute. She says these include blue collar and service jobs, as well as jobs in business support, landscaping, waste management, travel services, and hospitality industries.
“Job stress can occur when there is a poor match between the demands of the job and the capabilities, resources, or needs of the workers.”
An analysis was in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
