(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
A preliminary study indicates overweight or obese postmenopausal women who got hormone therapy in breast cancer treatment were less likely to have the cancer recur – or for it to recur later – if they took aspirin or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
At the University of Texas at Austin, Linda deGraffenried looked at data from 440 women – most overweight or obese – with the estrogen receptor-positive form of breast cancer.
She says many took aspirin.
“A large majority of those were taking them at the low-dose, baby aspirin level, and even at this level, they were showing benefit.”
She says patients should see their doctors before starting aspirin.
The study in the journal Cancer Research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
