(KANE‘OHE)– On Thursday, September 22 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Hale Imiloa 111, Nader Haghighipour will deliver a presentation about the NASA Kepler mission discovery of
new planetary candidates as part of the Community Forum in Chemistry series at Windward Community College. The forum is free and open to the public. Parking is free.
Haghighipour will identify and discuss the occurrence rate of terrestrial-size planets within the Habitable Zone of their host stars, and present Kepler data from the most recent catalog of 104 exoplanet candidates—with implications of the findings about the formation of habitable planets.
Nader Haghighipour obtained his PhD degree in planetary dynamics from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1999. After a few postdoc positions at the University of California-Irvine, Northwestern University and the Carnegie Institute of Washington, he joined the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), University of Hawaii Mānoa in 2004, where he is now a professor of Astronomy. His field of research is planetary dynamics and planet formation with emphasis on the detection, formation, and characterization of habitable planets both in our solar system and extrasolar planets. He is currently a member of the Kepler and TESS missions science team, and the president of the division of planetary sciences and astrobiology of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
The Community Forum in Chemistry is co-sponsored by Windward Community College and the American Chemical Society-Hawaii Section. For more information, call Letty Colmenares, PhD, Professor of Chemistry at Windward Community College, 236-9120.
