(Honolulu)– “The Power of People” is the theme of the 2017-2018 season at Honolulu Theatre for Youth. Kicking off in August, the season will feature eight inspiring stories created for Hawaii families. Artistic Director Eric Johnson says, “This season we will journey to ancient China, re-examine the modern ohana and explore underwater worlds. What these stories of perseverance, ingenuity, empathy and understanding have in common is that each play celebrates our most precious resource, each other.”
Leading off this season will be a play created by HTY company member Alvin Chan, who thrilled audiences with Anime Momotaro and A Korean Cinderella and has now written an original retelling of the ultimate “girl-power” tale, The Ballad of Mu Lan. The season continues with electrifying original works by TeAda Productions, Annie Cusick Wood, Lee Cataluna, Moses Goods and Kathleen Doyle.
The final show of the season will be the much anticipated musical theatre experience, Shocka: The Story of Energy in Hawaii. This original musical will be the third in HTY’s acclaimed series of multi-partner collaborations that included GRINDS and H20.
From the tiniest preschool patrons to our kupuna, the 2017-2018 HTY season promises to delight audiences with the hope and promise of the people, cultures and community that surround us. (A complete listing of plays, dates and times follows below.)
HTY is honored to announce that we are now an official Blue Star Theatre offering discounts to our military families. For more information visit our website.

Sometimes they get an OUCH, and they can’t pinpoint where the OUCH is, it’s just somewhere inside. One day BOO and HOO begin to feel other people’s OUCHES. So they set out on an adventure with their box of band aids to fix all the OUCHES in the world.

THE RED BALLOON
by Annie Cusick Wood (based on the film by Albert Lamorisse)
recommended ages 5+
Pascal’s best friend is a balloon, but this is no ordinary balloon. He comes when called. Well, …mostly. He and Pascal do everything together… except when balloons are not allowed. Based on the academy award winning film about friendship this story was one of the first works for children to artfully approach the topic of bullying. The moving story is as relevant today in Hawaii as it was in 1950s Paris.
