(HONOLULU) – Mayor Rick Blangiardi has requested that Honolulu Hale be lit in the color red from sundown Tuesday, May 4 through sunrise on Wednesday, May 5 for International Firefighter’s Day. The annual International Firefighter’s Day honors firefighters who have died while serving our community and dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of all of us.
“The sacrifices firefighters make to protect our lives and property is invaluable,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “The pandemic has put unthinkable strain on our community and here on O‘ahu, our firefighters not only continued to serve on the front line every day, but stepped up to lead efforts in COVID-19 testing and vaccinations. The lighting of Honolulu Hale is just a small way to say thank you to the men and women of our Honolulu Fire Department for their unwavering service.”
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) also invites community members to “Shine Your Light for Firefighters” by lighting your homes in the color red on May 4. It asks that you change your porch or lānai light(s) and share your #ShineYourLight4Firefighters story on social media as a “thank you” to firefighters everywhere.
“The Shine Your Light for Firefighters campaign is when communities commemorate and thank our firefighters around the globe by shining a red light outside their homes,” said Acting Honolulu Fire Department Chief Lionel Camara Jr. “The goal of the men and women of the HFD is to never dim the bright light of public service.”
