(O‘AHU) – Holiday lights aren’t the only illumination coming to the North Shore this holiday season!
The Honolulu departments of Parks & Recreation and Design & Construction are pleased to announce the beginning of a project to replace the light poles for the Waialua District Park swimming pool.
This project will replace the six lights poles surrounding the pool, estimated to have been removed about seven years ago due to corrosion. The on-site work is scheduled to begin later this month, with the entire project expected to be completed in summer 2024.
Public access to the pool is expected to remain for the majority of the project, though shutdowns will be necessary for impactful activities such as raising the poles. Please visit the pool’s online listing of available hours for the latest schedule in the “Parks” section of pros.hnl.info
The $637,700 construction contract for this project was awarded to Paul’s Electrical Contracting LLC, with the nearly $189,000 design contract awarded to Bennett Engineers Inc. Prior to this project, the fields at Waialua District Park received an entirely new lighting system in summer 2021. The field lighting project included: underground infrastructure, concrete foundations, new poles, and LED light fixtures, costing approximately $3.6 million in construction and design.
The City is very much looking forward to returning evening swim opportunities to this rural community. To assist with making this facility as available to the public as possible following the improvements, anyone interested in working as a lifeguard at this location (or any City park pool) should contact the pool staff at (808) 637-6061 or visit bit.ly/OahuPools
The Waialua District Park Pool also recently experienced other improvements as part of DPR’s energy efficiency project with NORESCO. Those were completed in March 2023 and include: on-site chlorine generation, upgraded water quality controls, and a more energy efficient pool pump. This park also received interior and exterior LED lights, along with high efficiency energy transformers, as part of this project.
The five outdoor courts at this park were recently resurfaced in mid-October 2023, as part of DPR’s on-going Kākou for Parks Program, at a cost of just over $122,000.
Opened to the public in June 1961, the nearly 13-acre Waialua District Park also offers a gymnasium, ball fields, and a playground.
