(HONOLULU) – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services provides the following update regarding the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (KRWWTP).
Test results of an effluent sample taken Dec. 22, 2023, have shown the enterococcus bacteria count in the KRWWTP treated effluent is well within permit limits, and the Dec. 21, 2023, exceedance is not continuing. Additionally, test results from shoreline sampling taken Dec. 22, 2023, show bacteria levels do not exceed state water quality criteria.
DOH has instructed the city to remove signage based on the city’s monitoring results.
DOH issued a brown water advisory for the island of O‘ahu as a result of recent heavy rain Dec. 21, 2023. As of the issuance of this press release, the advisory remains in effect. Per DOH’s brown water advisory, the public is advised to stay out of water impacted by runoff from the recent heavy rain event.
