(Honolulu)– The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction will begin electrical upgrades at the Alapa‘i Bus Facility to support the electrification of the City’s bus fleet. Work began March 31, and will take place Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). The project is expected to take approximately seven months to complete.
As part of the project, night and weekend work will be required at the intersection of Kapi‘olani Boulevard and South Street. This phase will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the day and from 6:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at night.

The public is advised to expect the presence of heavy construction equipment and to allow extra travel time when navigating the area. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should observe all traffic controls, posted signs, and Special Duty Police Officers to ensure safety.
Construction Schedule and Potential Traffic Impacts
The project area will cover portions of South Street, South King Street, and the Alapa‘i Bus Facility, located beneath the Joint Traffic Management Center at 710 South King Street. The majority of the work will take place within the bike lane along South King Street during the day, with some work occurring in the evenings and on weekends at the South King Street intersection.
Temporary Bike Lane Closures:
- March 31 – May 16: Bike lane along South King Street
- May 16 – June 6: Bike lane along South King Street
- June 6 – August 8 (Night & Weekend Work): Kapi‘olani Boulevard/South Street intersection
- August 8 – October 25: Bike lane along South King Street
Project Scope and Purpose
The project involves trenching approximately 850 linear feet of underground electrical conduits from the intersection of South Street and South King Street, running in the Diamond Head direction along the mauka side of South King Street. This will provide power to the Alapa‘i Bus Facility in preparation for the installation of electric bus chargers.
This project is a critical component of Honolulu’s Sustainable Transit Initiative, which seeks to modernize public transportation by electrifying the City’s bus fleet. It aligns with the City’s Climate Action Plan, supporting the transition to a cleaner, more energy-efficient transportation system. Infrastructure improvements will include high-capacity charging solutions and electrical system upgrades to accommodate a growing number of electric buses.
Project Partners and Funding
The $2,673,067 project was designed by Ronald N.S. Ho and Associates Inc. at a cost of $679,000. The project is being managed by Bowers and Kubota Consulting, with Wasa Electrical Services, Inc. serving as the prime contractor, in coordination with Hawaiian Electric Company.
The City will make every effort to complete this essential work as efficiently as possible, minimizing inconvenience to the community. We appreciate the public’s patience, cooperation, and support as we work to improve this critical transit facility.
