(Honolulu)– Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi will travel internationally from April 22 through May 2, 2026, on an official business mission to the People’s Republic of China focused on economic diversification, strengthening global partnerships, and advancing key initiatives that will benefit the residents of Oʻahu. Mayor Blangiardi will be accompanied by his wife, Karen, during the trip.
Mayor Blangiardi will visit Beijing and travel to Honolulu’s sister cities, Chengdu and Fuzhou, to reinforce longstanding cultural and economic ties. The visit will also explore new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as tourism, technology, sustainability, investment, as well as agriculture and restaurant partnerships that can further support Hawaiʻi’s local economy and food systems.
A highlight of the visit will include meetings in Chengdu, home to the world-renowned giant panda conservation and research programs. As part of broader discussions on cultural exchange and international partnerships, and following more than a year of discussions, Mayor Blangiardi will explore the potential to bring giant pandas to the Honolulu Zoo, an effort that would require careful coordination and agreement between the two countries.
“This mission is about building meaningful relationships that translate into real opportunities for our community,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “We are focused on diversifying our economy, strengthening international partnerships, and advancing initiatives that will support long-term growth and resiliency for Honolulu. We are also exploring opportunities in agriculture and the restaurant sector to benefit our local businesses and food security efforts. And we are excited about the possibility of expanding cultural connections in ways that inspire our community, including exploring the very real possibility of welcoming giant pandas to the Honolulu Zoo.”
The Mayor’s itinerary will include meetings with government officials, business leaders, and industry partners, as well as discussions centered on several major public-facing initiatives currently being developed by the City.
Managing Director Mike Formby will serve as Acting Mayor for the duration of Mayor Blangiardi’s travel.
