“We’re delighted that the Kawakami family has agreed to sell the monthly bus passes at their food marts,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “Partnerships such as this make it possible for us to accomplish many things together as we strive towards our shared goals.”
Menehune Food Mart is the second business to collaborate with the county on the sale of Kaua’i Bus passes. Pono Market started selling bus passes in May.
“This is a great example of government and private business partnering to achieve our goals of reducing traffic, reducing our dependency on fossil fuel, and encouraging residents to utilize the convenient services that the Kaua’i Bus has to offer,” said State Rep. Derek Kawakami, who is involved in the family business. “I would like to personally thank the mayor and the Transportation Agency for considering Menehune Food Mart in this exciting endeavor that will offer convenience and value to the many riders around our island.”
Monthly bus passes can also be purchased at the Lîhu’e Civic Center at the motor vehicle registration window Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on holidays.
Another option is to purchase a one or six month ($120) or an annual ($240) bus pass at The Kaua’i Bus office located on Ho‘olako St. across from police headquarters.
For the mainline routes, individual fares are $2 for adults, while seniors and youths ages seven to 18 pay $1 for one-way travel. Children, six and under, ride free when accompanied by an adult.
Fares for the shuttle routes are less – 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for seniors and youths ages seven to 18.
Mayor Carvalho’s Holo Holo 2020 vision for Kaua’i calls for all organizations, businesses, residents and visitors on Kaua’i to be part of creating an island that is sustainable, values the native culture, has a thriving and healthy economy, cares for all – keiki to kupuna – and has a responsible and user-friendly local government.
