(Honolulu)- – Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed into law Bill 72, which extends the City’s smoking ban to several City beach and park areas, and also approved three other measures.
“Everyone deserves to enjoy healthy and smoke-free public spaces, and that includes our beautiful beaches,” Mayor Caldwell said.
The expanded ban prohibits smoking at Duke Kahanamoku Beach Park, Kapiolani Beach Park, Kapiolani Park Beach Center, Kapiolani Park, Kuhio Beach Park, Sandy Beach Park and beach areas of Ala Moana Regional Park.
The ban takes effect immediately. Violators are subject to fines of up to $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second violation within one year, and $500 for subsequent violations.
Caldwell also signed bills 4, 71 and 78.
Bill 4 establishes a fund to award grants in aid to nonprofit organizations; Bill 71 requires City street lights to meet certain light pollution standards; and Bill 78 repealed the City’s regulation of palmistry.
