(KANE‘OHE)-—The goal has been met, and enthusiastically exceeded! On April 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., on the lanai at TRiO SSS (Student Support Services) in Hale Na‘auau on the WCC campus, Chancellor Doug Dykstra will have his head shaved as a result of honoring a pledge he made for this year’s Foodbank Hawaii food drive. The actual amount raised will be revealed at the event.
“I am happy to do it for this worthy cause!” said Chancellor Dykstra.
Dykstra’s goal was to lead the UH System in monetary and food donations for this year’s Foodbank Hawaii food drive with 7,000 either in money or pounds of food by Friday, April 26. Last year’s campus contribution was $2,895 and 572 pounds of food. TRiO SSS director and Foodbank drive coordinator Roy Inouye came up with the challenge for the chancellor and in the process discovered the students at WCC were the most enthusiastic donors.
“Some people gave their old rusty cans, some gave from their wallets, but the most impressive heartwarming giving was the giving that came from the heart—we had people who didn’t have money to give using their EBT card to get food to donate, some more than one time (if you don’t know what an EBT card is, you’ve never been hungry)—we had people who catch the bus asking others to buy a case of water for them to donate—we had people with large families and foster kids donating several bags of rice–we had people on financial aid donating food more than once,” explained Roy Inouye, WCC’s Foodbank drive coordinator.
Jessie Aki, assistant professor of cosmetology at Honolulu Community College will perform the new do. Students and the community are invited to celebrate the fundraising efforts. Everyone is encouraged to bring a food or monetary donation to add to the drive.
