(Honolulu)– A “cool” fundraiser sponsored by American Savings Bank (ASB) raised more than $50,000 for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children (Kapi‘olani) yesterday at the Ice Palace in Aiea.
ASB partnered with USA Curling to launch the Hawaii Curling Club with an entire day dedicated to introducing the quirky, competitive sport to Hawaii. Curling clinics were held for children from ASB’s Bank for Education Ohana schools, and the state’s first Charity Curling Classic featured 16 sponsored teams of six who battled for the gold to raise money for Kapi‘olani. Players included Rich Wacker, president and CEO of ASB, Martha Smith, CEO of Kapi‘olani Medical Center, and Ray Vara, CEO of Hawaii Pacific Health. Tracy Sachtjen and John “Nilla” Benton, members of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team, conducted the student clinics and coached the Curling Classic teams in their efforts toward the gold.
ASB has been a generous supporter of Kapi‘olani for the past several years, having adopted the not-for-profit hospital as one of the beneficiaries of its annual ‘Kahiau’ employee giving campaign. “We wanted to host our own unique fundraising event each year which would benefit an organization we select. Kapi‘olani’s unique and indispensable role in Hawaii as our state’s only children’s specialty hospital was a perfect choice.” Wacker said. “As the American Savings Bank ‘ohana, we know we cannot take Kapi‘olani’s world class pediatric care for granted. We hope our efforts and participation in this remarkable sport will get people thinking about supporting Kapi‘olani in their own way as well.”
“We were excited to be selected as this year’s beneficiary of this fun and innovative idea for fundraising,” said Martha Smith. “The funds raised at this event will help Kapi‘olani to continue to provide all of Hawai‘i’s children the world class pediatric care they deserve, right here at home.”
“Believe it or not, it has long been a goal of ours to bring the Olympic sport of curling to Hawaii,” said Rick Patzke, USA Curling chief operating officer. “The 50th state of the United States has now become the 45th state with curling activity. We are extremely proud to be partnering with American Savings Bank to support the growth of curling as well as the mission of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.”
About the sport of Curling
One of the world’s oldest team sports and an official Olympic event since 1998, curling is a sport in which players slide stones across a sheet of ice towards a target area. It is related to bowls, boule and shuffleboard. The curler can induce a curved path by causing the stone to slowly turn as it slides. The slide may be further influenced by two sweepers with brooms who accompany it down the sheet, using the brooms to alter the state of the ice in front of the stone. A great deal of strategy and teamwork goes into choosing the ideal path and placement of a stone for each play, giving curling its nickname of “Chess on Ice.”
Curling stones are made of a rare, close and evenly grained granite quarried on Scotland’s Ailsa Craig. They weigh a standard 42 pounds with handles attached and cost about $600 each.
