Weighing too much when you are diagnosed with prostate cancer could be a bad sign. At Kaiser Permanente Southern California in Pasadena, researchers saw an indication of this in data on 751 patients who had operations for prostate cancer.
Researcher Reina Haque:
“Men who died from prostate cancer were 50 percent more likely to be overweight or obese at diagnosis, compared to men who did not die from the disease.”
Haque says overweight and obese patients tend to have more advanced disease at diagnosis and are more likely to have cancer that spreads – and surgeons are less likely to be able to remove all of the cancerous tissue in a single operation.
The study in the journal Obesity Research and Clinical Practice was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
