(Hawaii)– From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
Flu season typically peaks between January and March. If there is a good side to this, it’s that now is a good time to increase the odds that you’ll get through peak season without a bad case of flu. If you haven’t gotten your flu vaccine yet, get one now.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu expert Dr. Anne Schuchat says people ages 6 months and older should get vaccinated, and some people especially need protection:
“People at greater risk for serious complications from the flu include pregnant women, people 65 years and older, young children, and people who have chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes.”
Schuchat says CDC does not recommend one type of vaccine over another, but does recommend getting vaccinated. She also says flu season can run as late as May.
