(LĪHU‘E) – Kaua‘i RSVP, an organization under the Agency on Elderly Affairs, is sponsoring a hygiene supplies drive for homeless veterans that will run from Jan. 6 to Jan. 24.
The project is being done in recognition of MLK Day of Service as a way to transform the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into community service that helps to empower and strengthen local communities.
“I encourage everyone to show their appreciation for those that dedicated their time in the military to preserving our precious freedom. This is a way for us to give back to the veterans who really need our support now,” said Kaua’i RSVP Director Celia Melchor-Questin.
She also asked for the public’s help with getting the word out about the hygiene supplies drive.
Included on the list of items being requested are: toothbrushes; toothpaste; shaving kits; shampoos; body soaps; and hand sanitizers.
The items can be dropped off Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations:
- Agency on Elderly Affairs – Līhu’e Civic Center, Pi‘ikoi Building, Suite 330
- Hanapēpē Armory – 1-3460 Kaumuali‘i Highway
- Kaua’i Veterans Clinic – 4485 Pahe‘e Street, Līhu’e
Additionally, hygiene supplies will be accepted at the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: Keeping Peace on Jan. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Kukui Grove Center. Kaua’i RSVP will be manning a table at the event.
On Jan. 27, the collected items will be sorted and placed in packages by RSVP volunteers and then delivered to the Kaua‘i Veterans Clinic for their homeless veteran clients.
Anyone with questions can contact Grace Delos Reyes at 241-4479 or Celia Melchor-Questin at 241-4478 or send an email to rsvp@kauai.org.
RSVP is the nation’s largest volunteer network for people 55 and better. Over 400,000 RSVP volunteers across the country use their life experiences to help their communities.
On Kaua’i, RSVP volunteers donate about 35,000 hours of service per year.
