(Honolulu)– The Queen’s Medical Center presented a check for $25,000 to the Aloha United Way for its Philippines Disaster Recovery Fund, which aims to rebuild the lives and communities of those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
Queen’s employees and volunteers turned out in force when Queen’s offered to match every dollar raised during its Queen’s for the Philippines Fundraiser. The staff and volunteers contributed $12,500. The Queen’s Medical Center matched it and gave $12,500, for a total of $25,000.
“The Queen’s ‘ohana really made this a season of giving,” said Art Ushijima, President and CEO of The Queen’s Health Systems. “Together, we wanted to start off the New Year offering hope and support to the people of the Philippines.”
Employees and volunteers found creative ways to raise money for the effort. One member of Queen’s Rehabilitation Services turned his family’s holiday gathering into a bidding war for the children’s artwork and raised $400. Staff at the Queen’s Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation Center gave presents to each other in the form of donations to the Philippines; and volunteers sang Christmas songs while jingling bells and a collection jar.
“When it comes to helping others, our Queen’s ‘ohana is really incredible,” said Ushijima. “They always come together for the sake of others – patients, visitors, co-workers, and the community. We are honored to match their efforts, and to contribute to the rebuilding efforts in the Philippines.”
