(Oahu)– Dr. Anthony Paul Sison Guerrero, MD, has been promoted to Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Guerrero, a JABSOM alumnus, becomes the first psychiatry Chair of Filipino Ancestry at a U.S. medical school.
Since July 2012, Dr. Guerrero has served as interim Chair of Psychiatry while continuing in his roles as Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division and Residency Training Program.
“After more than 14 years with the department, Dr. Guerrero is notably qualified as the next Chair,” said Dr. Jerris Hedges, JABSOM Dean. “Dr. Guerrero began his career in 1999 as a psychiatrist in our State-University Collaboration on Lāna`i, solidifying his commitment to public psychiatry and the severely mentally ill of all ages,” said Dean Hedges. Dr. Guerrero went on to serve as our Director of Medical Student Education and Clerkship Director.
In 2003, Dr. Guerrero became the founding leader of the Kapi`olani Behavioral Health Service, which has since grown into a comprehensive child and adult consultation-liaison program based at Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women and Chidlren (KMCWC).
Dr. Guerrero was appointed Associate Chair of Education and Child & Adolescent Division Director in 2004, where he oversaw the work of our undergraduate, Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. Under his leadership, the Child and Adolescent Division remains one of the strongest components in the department.
In 2011 he became the Psychiatry Department’s Executive Associate Chair. He led the effort to develop and initiate a new model of faculty assignment and development which will define and advance the next phase of growth for the department.
Dr. Guerrero also holds leadership roles among several psychiatry associations around the world. He has also published 27 peer-reviewed journal articles, 15 chapters in major textbooks and edited a seminal textbook on Problem-Based Behavioral Science and Psychiatry.
In addition to his impressive record, Dr. Guerrero is a JABSOM alumnus – one of the youngest graduates ever to complete medical school at U.H. — and the first graduate of Hawai`i’s Triple Board (pediatrics, psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry) Residency Program. He is a graduate of Saint Louis School.
Guerrero succeeds previous JABSOM Psychiatry Chair, Dr. Naleen Andrade, to the Deanʻs Office. Andrade currently serves as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for all of the medical school’s Graduate Medical Education programs. Former Chairs of the Psychiatry Department also include Walter Char and John F. McDermott.
