Health experts think a lot of people with disabilities are missing the benefits of being physically active. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers say nearly half of working-age adults with disabilities get no aerobic activity. Aerobic activity can reduce risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes – and people with disabilities have higher risks of those.
CDC researcher Dianna Carroll:
“Adults with disabilities should find activities that they enjoy, that they can do safely, and that they can do according to their abilities.”
People with disabilities were more likely to be active if a doctor recommended it, and Carroll says they should talk with their health care provider.
The study was in a CDC Vital Signs report.
