(Wailua) – A blessing was held recently for the groundbreaking of a pipeline replacement project in the Wailua Houselots Subdivision.
Department of Water (DOW) Construction Project Management Officer Dustin Moises welcomed the group that included representatives from Goodfellow Bros. Inc., the County of Kauai Department of Public Works and the Department of Water, before handing it over to Kahu Jade Battad who performed a Hawaiian blessing over all those involved with the project as well as those in the community that will benefit from the work.
The event marked the beginning of work along the following roads: Eggerking; Hookipa; Kamokila; Kula; Lanakila; Makani; O’o; Pua; Wailana; Ulana; as well as those along Haleilio Road, from Eggerking to Makani. The project will replace various cast iron, galvanized steel and concrete cylinder pipes that are, in some cases, nearly 75 years old. The project entails the installation of approximately 12,500 linear feet of new waterline ranging from 4-inch to 16-inch diameters, along with new valves, service laterals and hydrants.
A construction contract was awarded to Goodfellow Bros., Inc. in the amount of $4.5 million with funding via the State Department of Health Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). In addition, the DOW was awarded a $750,000 Green Project Reserve grant by DOH based on the anticipated water efficiency of the pipeline replacement once completed.
“The Department is excited to start the waterline project as it supports our mission to provide safe, affordable, and sufficient drinking water to our customers,” said Moises. “This project is “green” in the sense that it will reduce leaks, which minimizes pumping requirements, and in turn lowers our electricity costs incurred to operate sources in the area.”
The pipeline replacement is scheduled to be completed in December 2013 and the DOW appreciates the cooperation of residents in the area.
