(HONOLULU) – Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced that the City and County of Honolulu is accepting resumes for the position of Director of Emergency Management. This critical leadership role is directly responsible for overseeing the organization, planning, administration, and operation of the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), ensuring that O‘ahu remains resilient and prepared for all emergencies.
“The safety and well-being of our residents and visitors is a cornerstone of our mission, said Mayor Blangiardi. “We are seeking an experienced, skilled, and forward-thinking team leader who can elevate our emergency management strategies and ensure that O‘ahu is prepared for whatever challenges come our way.”
The Director of Emergency Management serves as the primary advisor to the Mayor on emergency preparedness and response strategies. The role focuses on safeguarding public health, safety, and welfare during disasters and emergencies while ensuring the continuity of government operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing comprehensive emergency management plans and programs.
- Overseeing all activities of the Department of Emergency Management, including setting long-range goals and supervising staff.
- Coordinating emergency management efforts with State and Federal agencies, military organizations, and private partners.
- Managing the City’s Emergency Operations Center during activations for emergencies, disasters, or major exercises.
- Leading public outreach initiatives to educate and prepare the community for emergency situations.
- Ensuring the integration of military and strategic policy into local emergency planning.
- Directing the development of warning systems and public informational procedures for all emergency scenarios.
Special Work Requirements: The position requires availability 24/7 to lead responses to emergencies.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Proven leadership experience in emergency management or a closely related field.
- Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
- A comprehensive understanding of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery strategies.
- Familiarity with Hawai‘i’s unique geographic and cultural considerations.
