(Honolulu)– There is less than a month left for local poets to enter Hawai’i Pacific University’s James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry. The deadline is Dec. 15. The award will recognize a Hawai’i writer for an outstanding poem or group of poems. The winner will receive a $250 cash award and have his or her work featured in Hawai’i Pacific Review, the annual literary magazine published by HPU. For more information, contact Patrice M. Adele Ne Jame will judge this year’s competition. Ne Jame is an award-winning poet, author of two books of poetry, and assistant professor of English at HPU.
To participate, send three poems with a 100-line limit each, along with name, address, phone number, email address, names of poems on a cover page, and a five-line biography to: James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry, 1060 Bishop Street, LB 7A, Honolulu, HI 96813. No author identification on the actual poems, please. Poems must be typed to be considered. Participants must have resided in Hawai’i for at least one year. Submitted poems must not have been previously published. Submissions need to be postmarked by Dec. 15, 2012. Manuscripts will not be returned. HPU faculty and staff are not eligible for the competition. The winner will be announced in January 2013, and the award will be given at HPU’s annual Ko’olau Writing Workshops, scheduled in March 2013. The winner will also be asked to share his or her poetry and writing experience with HPU students and faculty during the spring semester. Vaughan, who established a fund to enhance the literature and poetry programs at the university.
