(LÎHU‘E )– The public is invited to attend a Women’s History Month celebration next week hosted by the Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women (KCSW).
The event will be held at the Kaua‘i Museum Courtyard on Wednesday, March 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
The program will feature well-known community leaders including: Aletha Kaohi Goodwin, representing the Hawaiian community; Dimples Kano, from the Japanese community; Dr. Geri Young, representing the Chinese community; Linda Pieratt, from the Portuguese community; and Norma Doctor Sparks, representing the Filipino community.
Also featured will be Cindy Combs, an award-winning slack key guitarist and songwriter who will perform Hawaiian music.
All of these women are descendants of diverse ethnic heritages that have created the unique blend of cultures on Kaua’i. They have endured and transcended the limitations imposed on women, carved out new futures for themselves and their children, and enriched the community.
Women’s History Month honors women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their public service and/or government leadership. From championing basic human rights to ensuring access and equal opportunity for all Americans, they have led the way in establishing a stronger and more democratic country.
Although often overlooked and undervalued, women have collectively influenced public policy and the building of viable institutions and organizations.
The KCSW is part of the Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women, which strives to advance the status of women and girls by acting as a catalyst for positive change through advocacy, education, collaboration and program development.
The KCSW meets on the third Wednesday of the month. The next scheduled meeting is on March 16, 5 p.m., Lîhu‘e Civic Center, Mo’ikeha Building, Meeting Room 2A/2B.
All KCSW meetings are open to the public.
