(Honolulu)– Bar 35, has been at the forefront of the Downtown-Chinatown district resurgence. It was not too long ago that many store fronts were boarded up and in disrepair, and the area was (all too) well-known for nefarious and illicit activity. Gradually, year-by-year, new, fresh, contemporary and innovative businesses – all of them locally owned – have come on line. Today, Bar 35’s neighbors include, Next Door, Lucky Belly, Manifest, Downbeat Diner and Lounge, Scratch, Grondin, and the soon-to-open Livestock Tavern. Because of the diversity that can be found within just a few, very walkable blocks, when the weekend hits, this still-gritty, yet safe and interesting district, is sure to be on the list of places to go.
Well before the renewed popularity of beer and gastro pubs, Bar 35 was all about beer, with over 200 different beers from around the world on hand at any one time.
Bar 35’s beer legacy continues to this day. Whether you are a seasoned beer enthusiast or new to the world of brewing and beers, Bar continues to be the spot to discover beers from as far away as Australia, Belgium, and the Czech Republic, and as close as California and, of course, Hawaii.
Since 2006, Bar 35 has hosted House of Brews, a weekly (Wednesday) beer tasting experience. Depending on the weekly featured theme and breweries, guests can learn about and taste up to eight different beers. Appetizer samples from Chef Valentini included in the regular $25 tasting fee. (The fee runs higher for special and limited edition tastings.) Here are this month’s House of Brews themes:
October 8 – Fall Beers. A great way to taste various brewer’s fall release/seasonal offerings.
October 15 – Oregon Beers. Bar 35 is very fortunate to have a representative from the famed and loved Deschutes Brewery and Widmer Brothers Brewery.
October 22 – San Diego Beers. A showcase of west coast domestic beers styles and selections.
October 29 – Scar Beers. And there are many, including Dead Guy and Voodoo Stout. (Costume optional, but encouraged!)
House of Brews starts at 6:00 p.m. Walk-ins welcome. For group events of 6 more we suggest calling ahead to reserve a section. More information at www.bar35.com or (808) 537-3535.
