(Honolulu)– Come celebrate our community’s efforts to pave the way for a sustainable, clean energy future for our state at Hawaiian Electric’s 10th annual Clean Energy Fair. The event, which kicks off Energy Awareness Month, will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kahala Mall near Macy’s. The fair is co-sponsored by the Hawaii Nature Center and the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism.
This year’s featured guest entertainers are Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning artist Weldon Kekauoha and Electric Ed of Mad Science Hawaii.
“This family event is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about energy efficiency and how we can all do our part to care for our island’s precious resources. This year, we brought the event to east Honolulu to spread our clean energy message across the island,” said Liane Lum, education and consumer affairs administrator at Hawaiian Electric. The Clean Energy Fair brings together organizations and businesses involved in resource conservation, energy efficiency and clean energy initiatives. The free event offers the public the opportunity to learn about renewable energy, electric vehicles, solar installations, and energy rebates.
“We’re excited to be a part of event that promotes conservation and sustainability,” said Pauline Kawamata, volunteer program manager at the Hawaii Nature Center. “Those who stop by our booth can look forward to making sailing canoes from and learn how Hawaiians used wind energy to power their sailing canoes in the past.“
The festivities will open with a performance by Electric Ed of Mad Science Hawaii at 10:15 a.m. At noon, Weldon Kekauoha takes the stage to perform songs from his solo albums. The entertainment ends with a special keiki hula performance at 1:30 p.m. by Ka Hale I o Kahala Halau.
Energy games and contests will be held between the live music performances, including prize drawings for an Apple iPad mini™ and a portable solar-powered generator. To enter the drawings, pick up an Energy Passport at any fair booth, visit all the booths – including the electric vehicle display – for a stamp, and drop the completed passport in the entry box at Hawaiian Electric’s booth. Participants must be 18 years or older to qualify.
Hawaiian Electric will also have a job booth highlighting available career opportunities at the company. Company representatives will be available throughout the day to answer questions from job seekers.
Interactive exhibits by Hawaii Nature Center and the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism, as well as Board of Water Supply, Hawaii Gas, and Hawaii Energy, round out the event. For more information on the Clean Energy Fair, call 543-7511 or visit www.hawaiianelectric.com.
