(Honolulu)– Hawai‘i Pacific University has again been recognized as a military-friendly university in the Military Advanced Education (MAE) 2013 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. This is the sixth year running that MAE has honored HPU with the distinction. The guide is now being distributed via mail and available online at http://www.mae-kmi.com.
MAE’s guide provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to implement military-friendly policies in support of the men and women in uniform. Among the attributes considered in evaluating this year’s institutions for inclusion are the flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits accepted by degree level, Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, on-campus active duty/veteran assistance, the support provided to the families of servicemembers, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, presence on military installations, and full-time counselors trained in veteran-specific mental health concerns.
“The Guide has become an invaluable tool for both education services officers (ESOs) and transition officers (TOs) when advising servicemembers and their families about degree and certification opportunities currently available from institutions of higher learning,” said Laural Hobbes, MAE’s editor.
This is the latest recognition for HPU’s continuing outreach to the military. Last year, HPU was named one of the nation’s most military friendly campuses in a listing published on the G.I. Jobs website by Victory Media. In 2010, HPU received the prestigious Institution Award from the Council of College and Military Educators in recognition of its significant contributions to military education. HPU is also a participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, a partnership between the university and the Department of Veteran Affairs, to supplement the tuition benefit of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Many military members attend classes at HPU’s Downtown and Hawaii Loa campuses, where they can work on a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Many of them also take advantage of HPU’s Military Campus Programs.
“The need to provide quality, flexible, integrated education programs to the mobile military family has been evident to me from serving 26 years in the Navy,” said HPU Associate Vice President Robert Cyboron, who oversees military and off-campus programs. “After serving, I realized it is my duty to serve those who currently serve our country.”
HPU’s Military Campus Programs provide education with both traditional and distance learning course delivery methods, and include locations at O‘ahu’s military installations. HPU also offers a Veteran Benefits office that assists veterans, service members, and family members with VA educational programs.
