(Honolulu)– It was lights, camera, action at Kaiser Permanente’s Moanalua Medical Center when cameras went inside two operating rooms to broadcast surgeries via satellite to the Vascular InterVentional Advances (VIVA) conference in Las Vegas.
VIVA is the largest vascular conference in the world. More than 2000 physicians from a dozen countries are attending this year’s event to learn best practices for the care of patients with vascular disease. Kaiser Permanente Hawaii ‘s Moanalua Medical Center was one of only six facilities in the world selected to participate in the telemedicine portion of the four-day conference.
“It’s an honor for Hawaii to participate in this international event,” said Peter Schneider, MD, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii vascular surgeon. “We’re able to share not only surgical techniques, but also our critical decision-making process with colleagues from around the world. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the quality medical care Hawaii has to offer.”
Three Kaiser Permanente Hawaii vascular surgeons and two teams of operating room technicians performed six cases via satellite for VIVA conference attendees. The interactive video feed provided the opportunity for the surgeons to explain the case, their approach, and the methodology to the live audience, as well as answer questions from session moderators and doctors in Las Vegas.
Cases performed today included repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm and popliteal aneurysm. Conference attendees include those from vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, interventional radiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, and cardiothoracic surgery.
Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has provided total health to the people of Hawaii for more than 50 years, with physicians who are members of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, the largest multi-specialty physician group practice in the state of Hawaii. Kaiser Permanente is dedicated to care innovations, clinical research, health education and the support of community health.
