(DGIwire) – To say that there have been changes in the workplace over the past 50 years is an understatement. Think back to the 80’s when smoking was allowed in the office. Back then, whether you were a smoker or not, chances are you left work smelling like cigarette smoke. Today, it would be a challenge to find any building that even allowedsmoking inside.
Along with the cessation of smoking, over the years employers have gained a greater understanding of the impact that an employee’s overall health has on the company. Whether it be productivity, sick days, employee turnover or simply the general mood in the work environment, there is no doubt that employee well-being affects the numbers.
It’s why so many companies have adopted policies and practices to encourage employee activity and wellness. If you’re an employer and you haven’t already, find ways to improve the individual and collective health of your company.
Here are 5 easy ways to start you on the road to a healthier and more profitable workplace according to Dian Griesel, Ph.D. President of Dian Griesel International and co-author of theTurboCharged® series of health books
- Hydrate! The best first step you can take is to make sure your employees have free access to clean drinking water. The minimal investment in a water cooler or filter for your tap will bring immeasurable returns. Encourage employees to drink at least a glass of water for every hour they’re at work. Not only does water hydrate but it also aids in filtering out any toxins in the body.
- Walk it out. Start an office walking program that offers incentives for meeting goals. Something as simple as an extra personal day per quarter for walking 4 weeks straight would do the trick and would help establish good habits. Once they see the results, this will be all the further incentive they will need.
- Meetings on the go! Almost every company has individual staff meetings. Why not take some of them on the road! 15-30 minutes of brisk walking and talking will not only give you and your employee much need exercise but may even encourage freer dialogue. Being out of the traditional office setting may put them at ease and allow them to share things with you they might not have otherwise felt comfortable sharing.
- Healthy snacks! Once a week bring in some fresh fruit for your co-workers to enjoy. Snacks like these remind everyone how good it feels to taste and eat healthy foods. Again, this will go a long way in establishing good habits.
- Be the example. If employees see you practicing what you preach they will be more apt to follow suit. Incorporate exercise into your day.
