(Honolulu) – McDonald’s employees today participated in a statewide community cleanup in all 75 McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii communities. The event, which occurred simultaneously within a two-block radius of each McDonald’s restaurant on Maui, the Big Island, Kauai and Oahu, included trash and litter pick-up and a total of 750 service hours by more than 375 McDonald’s employees.
The “My McDonald’s, My Community” cleanup event was conducted in support of Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful Day, a statewide volunteer event hosted by Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful, the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful is a nonprofit organization that encourages individuals to take greater responsibility for improving the community environment and preserving the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands.
“McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii is proud to partner with Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful in protecting our environment and keeping our Islands clean with events like the My McDonald’s, My Community statewide cleanup,” said Melanie Okazaki, regional marketing manager of McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii. “From the community cleanup to in-store sustainable practices, McDonald’s is committed to enriching the communities in which we serve, while striving to make the planet better and reduce our carbon footprint.”
In addition to the My McDonald’s, My Community cleanup, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has made environmental responsibility a key focus by working in areas such as sustainable packaging, waste management, energy conservation and green restaurant design.
“On behalf of Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful, we commend McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii – from their in-store efforts to their off-site cleanups – for their environmental stewardship in continuing their commitment to build and sustain vibrant communities,” said Dan Goodfellow, president of Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful. “We would like to encourage all interested volunteers to join us and McDonald’s in maintaining our beautiful Islands through volunteer efforts this spring.”
Throughout May, Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful will host volunteer events with service opportunities such as planting community trees and gardens, removing graffiti, reclaiming community amenities such as parks and playgrounds, cleaning up litter and debris from public lands, and hosting recycling and e-cycling drives.
